T 905-825-4256 QEW W Speers Wallace Halton Catholic District School Board staff has put forward a proposal to install new track and field facilities at three high schools. Bishop Reding in Milton, Notre Dame in Burlington and St. Ignatius of Loyola in Oakville are the schools on the receiving end. The existing tracks at these schools were installed in 1986, 1990 and 1985 respectively. While they are still in use and maintained by the board, Giacomo Corbacio, superintendent of facility management services for the board, says it is time for them to be replaced. "These schools are over 20 years old and it's time to put some renewal dollars towards them," he said. "They (the tracks and fields) are in usable condition, it is just that as these facilities get towards the end of their service life, it is just like an older vehicle, you have to put more and more money into them. There's a point where you have to say it is time to get a new vehicle and for us, it is time to resurface and put a new track in." Staff has proposed installing tracks with new asphalt bases and high-quality running surfaces. Depending on the current size of the tracks and available space, eight-lane tracks may replace the existing six-lane tracks. Staff will present the board with two options for the fields inside of the tracks, including natural, grass fields or artificial turf. The price of installing lights at these fields will also be presented for the board's approval. The lights being considered are the same as those currently in use at the new secondary school, Corpus Christ, in Burlington. "To date, it has been very successful (at Corpus Christi)," said Corbacio. "It is a new type of lighting. They are very energy efficient and they've got almost zero light spillage." There is still a lot of work to be done before the three projects will be put before the board for approval. Staff has already spoken to the three schools, as well as the municipalities. Construction drawings and bids will be asked for next, with a formal action report for replacing the three tracks and fields to be presented to the board in March 2009. If approved, construction could start as early as the end of March or early April 2009, depending on weather conditions. The completion date is expected to be Sept. 8, 2009. This means the tracks and inner fields at the three schools would not be available for use during the construction period. See More page 14
