The proposed renovations, currently scheduled to be done over a sevenmonth period beginning in April, will affect significant portions of the Maternal Child Unit including the area's labour, delivery and recovery rooms (LDR rooms). "We also have babies that are in our special care nursery that require a lot of care, so we cannot just not attend to the needs of people and the families that are going to be experiencing birth and having premature babies between Boxing Week Best $ Value CUSHION TOP Mattress & Furniture Sale! · Bed Frame · Mattress Pad · Bed Rails · Comforter · Layaway · Set Up · Disposal of Old Set · Slipsticks · Microfibre Set of Sheets · 2 Pillows · Sheet Straps · Sheet Snugglers With Any Mattress Set Purchased 2 399 U With Any Mattress Set Purchased NO GST NO PST · Bed Frame · Mattress Pad · Bed Rails · Comforter · Layaway · Set Up · Disposal of Old Set · Slipsticks · Microfibre Set of Sheets · 2 Pillows · Sheet Straps · Local Delivery With Any Mattress Set Purchased Over $500 3 239 329 CO EL ASTIC V IS TWIN XL 369 905-681-9020 905-878-4606 905-542-0481 the tiny miracles who are monitored by two nurses. When you take into account visiting relatives and the necessary equipment, the room can get quite crowded and intrusive, but that is something MacDonald hopes the renovations will change. "We will have some more discreet areas for parents to have some privacy," she said. "What we've found over the last three to five years is that our length of stay for babies in there has tripled and that's a good thing because that means we're really able to provide care for babies that need to be there, but what happens then is we have parents, who are in that environment for a week, two weeks, three weeks. So, we want to be able to provide them with an area where they can have a little bit of privacy instead of just sitting in the open concept area." To accomplish this task, the Special Care Nursery will be expanding to allow for each of the eight incubators to have its own cubical-like area that can be separated from the main room with a curtain. Each of these little rooms will include a closet for a visitor to put their things and a chair so a parent can actually sit down while they visit with their child. These renovations will also see an isolation room placed in the Special Care Nursery, something MacDonald said is essential. "What we found during the SARS Crisis is that we couldn't really fulfill our role in the regional system because there were babies from other hospitals that needed to be isolated and we had nowhere to isolate them," said MacDonald. MacDonald noted that all these changes appropriately reflect the time period the hospital is now functioning in as more emphasize is now placed on interaction between parents and babies while the baby is still in the hospital. The Maternal Child Unit will continue to function during its seven months of renovations. ING UR OA M FE AT nt il M EM ORY F
