www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 10, 2009 - 23 OTMH Volunteer Fair to showcase opportunities Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital's (OTMH) Auxiliary will host a Volunteer Fair to recruit new volunteers for 2009. The Volunteer Recruitment Fair will be held Thursday, Jan. 15 from 6-8 p.m. in the Auditorium (lower level) of the hospital located at 327 Reynolds St. Volunteer and staff representatives from various areas of the hospital will be available to discuss the different volunteering opportunities. Refreshments and free parking will be provided. OTMH has a variety of volunteer opportunities available in both direct and indirect patient areas for men, women and youths aged 14 and up. "Volunteering with the Auxiliary to OTMH is a great opportunity to get involved in your community, meet new people and gain additional skills and experiences," said Doug Coate, president of the Auxiliary to OTMH. "If your New Year's resolution involves making a difference in the lives of others, a wonderful way to do so would be to join our team," said Coate. "Our volunteers enhance our patients' quality of life by providing the personal touches that make a difference," said Carole Daniels, manager of Volunteer Services. With almost 700 volunteers, the Auxiliary to OTMH contributes more than 84,000 hours of service annually across more than 70 hospital services. The volunteers provide care and comfort on the nursing units, in renal dialysis and the Emergency department. They also greet outpatients and visitors; offer magazines and tuck items to patients; fundraise (Bingo, HELPP lottery, raffle ticket sales and the Gift Shop); provide behind-thescenes assistance through chart preparation, phone calls and clerical assistance, and more. Through creative and ambitious efforts, last year the Auxiliary raised $330,000 toward the purchase of much-needed medical equipment and the refurbishment of various areas of the hospital. "High school student volunteer opportunities on the nursing units and in transport can offer valuable work-related and transferable life skills and experience in a medical setting. These hours can count toward the 40-hour graduation commitment and eligible students may apply for post-secondary school bursaries from the Auxiliary," said Daniels.
