www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 16, 2009 - 5 Arts group prefer third QEP community centre option Continued from page 4 originally anticipated by the Town. Fenech noted of the $23.3 million needed for option three, around $22 million was going towards just getting the building up to code. "The upgrade of the mechanical sprinkler and the electrical system itself came to $7.5 million and then if we were to replace the roof, that's another $2.7 million," said Fenech. Ward 1 Councillor Ralph Robinson raised concerns about buffering centre neighbours from parking and traffic. Town staff noted this issue would be sorted out through upcoming public consultations with options ranging from some kind of vege- tation barrier to solid artificial fencing. While the purpose of Tuesday's meeting was only about examining the possible options, some have already found their favourites. "It's thrilling to sit here and see so many needs met in one project," said Mayor Rob Burton. "If I could tip my hand, I like option three." This provoked a round of applause from the audience of mostly arts community members, however, in case there was any doubt as to which option they preferred a succession of speakers soon put that to rest. "I've been waiting for this for a very, very long time and bugging everybody as Ralph (Robinson) and Mayor Burton knows," said Jean Grieve of the Oakville Suzuki Association and the Oakville Symphony. "I can't say that we have anything to say about the first two options because obviously there's not enough there to meet our needs. We desperately need space for a lot of arts groups and the quicker the better. Our association is spending so much on inadequate rentals. We have no space to put anything and we're in danger of losing our best teachers because we have no spaces for them to teach in." Britta Martini-Miles, executive director of CommUnity Arts Space, reiterated an offer by her group to use a large portion of its $160,000 savings to help fund the project. Robinson introduced a motion to accept the information presented by Fenech and to authorize staff to seek further public input. "For three years we've owned this property and I've got to say I'm disappointed that it took us three years to get this far, but now I'm delighted that we're as close as we are because we need this," said Robinson. "I, as the mayor was, am supportive of option three when the time comes." Robinson's motion passed unanimously and will go before council on Monday for approval.
