www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 23, 2009 - 33 Halla trumpets Three Gifts Concert on Saturday H ello from Halla and Happy New Year. I hope you had an enjoyable holiday season spent with family and friends. The holidays are a wonderful time of giving and hope, with many forms of musical celebration. I love to hear holiday music coming from villages while my elephant family roams the savannah. That got me to thinking that I should mention the Three Gifts Concert this Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. to St. Jude's Anglican Church in Oakville, in support of the $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) campaign. The concert features pianist Andrei Streliaev, mezzo soprano Norine Burgess and tenor Mervyn Russell. The Three Gifts Concert will celebrate music that reflects the importance of faith, hope and love. Faith, hope and love encourage us all to contribute to $MOMO, which enables Oakville to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The Foundation has launched the Turning The Tide Campaign to raise $100 million over the next five years to fund many more tremendously effective organizations and sustain a critical mass to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS at the grassroots. These grassroots organizations provide care to women who are ill and struggling to survive, assist orphans and other AIDS-affected children, support grandmothers and children in their care and sustain networks of people living with HIV and AIDS. Reach One Touch One Ministries (ROTOM) is one grassroots organization making a difference in Uganda. ROTOM supports grandmothers and children in their care by looking after their spiritual, emotional and physical needs, including food, water, sanitation, shelter and medical care. Among its many programs, ROTOM economically empowers both young and old through income-generating activities and facilitating bi-weekly community support group meetings for grandmothers and grandfathers. Grannies are taught about HIV and AIDS, with an emphasis on prevention and caring for the sick. And, grannies develop friendships, which have become the fabric for mutual support. ROTOM also helps children by paying for school tuition, meals and scholastic materials, to give them a chance to acquire basic education and eventually get a job and earn an income. Children benefit as well from self-esteem and confidence-building programs, which help them deal with past trauma and abuse. ROTOM has also established relations with grassroots leaders, including faith leaders, civic and opinion leaders, as well as local police authorities, to educate the broader com- munity about child abuse, especially For more information, 469-6415. sexual abuse of girls. visit www.millionor-- Submitted by Community organizations like moreslf.ca or phone 905$Million or More Oakville ROTOM are at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic and in the midst of a global economic challenge, your support for $MOMO and the Stephen Lewis Foundation is more important than ever.
