www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 23, 2009 - 7 SIU investigating death of Oakville man in Brantford The Province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) wants to hear from witnesses to an incident in which 32-year-old Benjamin Wood of Oakville died after he went through the ice of the Grand River in Brantford. The SIU stepped in on the case upon the request of the Brantford Police Service after Wood's body was recovered from the Grand River at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 20. "Wood had been interacting with officers of the Brantford Police Service (BPS) in the early morning hours when he ventured out onto the ice surface of the Grand River near the Brantford Casino," according to SIU spokesperson Frank Phillips. "A short time after doing so, he was seen by the BPS officers going through the ice," said Phillips. Just what the SIU means by "interacting" is at the crux of its investigation. "I can't give you a definitive answer. We are investigating to determine what the interaction was."
