4 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 24, 2009 www.oakvillebeaver.com Catholic school system still growing Catholic trustees will rule March 3 on Over the next 15 years, the Halton Catholic school board will need to spend about $135 million to build and expand schools to accommodate an anticipated 5,500 new students entering the system. A report presented to school board trustees on Tuesday night outlined the need for seven new elementary schools simply to serve high growth areas in north Oakville and Milton. As well, it suggested the board will need to build additions to St. Elizabeth Seton (Burlington), St. Catherine of Alexandria (Halton Hills), and St. Brigid's (Halton Hills) schools over the next five years. The forecast also envisions the need to eliminate 350 extra elementary pupil places in south Burlington, along with 550 spaces in south Oakville by 2013. The report, prepared by the consulting firm Watson & Associates, suggests the board has the finances to deal with its capital needs over the next 15 years. However, consultant Cynthia Clarke warned trustees that the forecast could be impacted by either a slowing in development or a decision by the provincial government to move forward with full-day schooling for kindergarten students. If you're the parent of Catholic elementary school students in Halton, it may be that you can't wait to see them trot off to class in a mandatory uniform. Or, it may be that you can't abide the thought of seeing them dressed in the required clothing. Either way, you'll want to mark March 3 on your calendar. That's when the issue of mandatory school uniforms for elementary students with the Halton Catholic District School Board will return to the board table, along with a recommendation on how the board should move forward. mandatory elementary school uniforms Since Sept. 2007, students at St. Gabriel elementary school in Burlington and Guardian Angels elementary school in Milton have been taking part in a pilot project to test out mandatory uniforms. Surveys to families involved in the pilot project are currently being distributed and will make up part of the information used to form a recommendation on how the board should proceed with the issue, said superintendent John Langill. He noted that a final decision on uniforms needs to be made to allow schools and students to prepare for September.
