"The board got some of what they wanted and we got some of what we wanted, and I think that is why the ratification was not a problem." A major component of the deal is a three per cent wage increase for each of the next four years. Currently, a new full-time secondary school teacher with a four-year degree makes $45,208 per year. The pay scale tops out at $84,086 for teachers with 12 years of experience or more. At the end of the new four-year contract, a new full-time teacher with the same educational background will earn $50,882, with full-time teachers with 12 years or more of experience earning $94,639. Kalvaitis said the membership is very happy with this premise. However, he added that he does worry whether the province will have enough money to cover this salary increase over the next four years considering the economic downturn. "It is a very good raise," he said. "I just hope that government revenues start to make a comeback so they can find the money somewhere." The deal also includes letters of agreement to work on improving future benefits, reducing workloads and resolving large class sizes. "It is a very good raise. Casey Kalvaitis, president of OSSTF Halton teachers bargaining unit "The bargaining is just the starting point," Kalvaitis said. "Now the real work begins." An additional agreement included in the settlement is the hiring of at least six fulltime secondary school teachers for the start of the 2009-10 school year. This will be funded through the Ministry of Education's Student Success Strategy. "We will be looking for those (teachers) to help class sizes," said Kalvaitis. The deal between OSSTF and the school board covers the four-year time period of Sept. 2008 to 2012. The school board gave the settlement its stamp of approval at last week's meeting. There are more than 1,200 secondary school teachers within Halton's 17 public secondary schools. A settlement has yet to be reached between the school board and the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario. Representatives were scheduled to meet on Tuesday.
