The fibre arts festival began in 1998, in earnest, through the initiative of Christel Wille and Oakville's six fibre arts guilds. It's aim is to provide an inspirational platform to experience and honour the age-old arts of quilting, hooking, lace-making and tatting, spinning and weaving, knitting and crocheting, embroidery and other techniques related to fibre treatments, said Coryell. "There is something I miss so much about Canada, and Oakville is home, so if we did move back, we would probably come back to Oakville because it is such a great place to live," she said. Although sopranos are a dime a dozen, Semkiw said she is different from other singers because of her tone and her work ethic. "It is really competitive, but I think my voice is a little bit different sounding than a lot of traditional coloraturas," she said. "It is very clear and very high, so I have the ability to sing notes a lot of people can't. I also work really hard and really love it and am really driven." Demuynck agrees. "She's got a very distinctive and beautiful sound to her voice and there's been interest in her voice from some very important conductors," he said. "She's just an excellent performer and the fact that she's someone we anticipate could be a very famous singer in the future, it's wonderful to have her here before she gets too big for us."
