Annual Young Round Square conference this spring. From Sunday, April 26, to Friday, May 1, 2009 more than 80 students and 30 adults from Bermuda, Japan, Canada, India, the United Sates, Thailand, Peru, Columbia, Australia, UK, Germany and South Africa will come together to take part in workshops, activities and experiences focusing on the theme, "The Power Within." Young Round Square of the Americas (YRSA) is a junior level association of Round Square International schools, providing opportunities and challenges for students in Grades 7 and 8. Round Square's origins are derived from the philosophy of Kurt Hahn who believed that schools should have greater purpose, beyond that or preparing students for college and university. He believed in educating young people for life in the fullest sense. Kurt Hahn's vision or education for the student embraced the development of all aspects of the student and encourage students to take responsibility for their community and environment. The theme of the 2009 conference draws its inspiration from Hahn's belief that: "There is more in you than you think," and will challenge the student delegates to examine the Round Square IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service) and the impact they can have on affecting change. "We believe that all students have the potential to change the world for the better," says Joanne McLean co-director and founder of Fern Hill School. "This conference provides students with opportunities to learn about leadership and to experience how they can shape events, rather than be shaped by them. Students will be exposed to different techniques and skills that they can take back to their home school in order to implement change and empower these adolescents and show them that they can make a difference." Fern Hill became a regional member of Round Square in 2004. Since its founding in 1982, Fern Hill has continued to promote the importance of community service, outdoor learning, environmentalism, international understanding and student leadership. A major component of the 2009 conference is the challenge for each delegate to develop a project that will address a problem in a sustainable way. When the students return to their home schools they will not only share their experiences but they will inspire others to partake in projects supporting service, adventure and the environment.
