Students at Beaconhouse International College private school are among them, but their principal has made it his goal to help them get to where they want to be. Mississauga resident Bilal Rashid opened the private secondary school in Oakville in December 2007 as "an alternate option, assisting student to get into their university or college of choice. Beaconhouse offers Grade 9 to 12 Ministry of Education approved high school courses. Right now, there are 50 courses available; with new programs in areas that Rashid has seen student demand, such as forensic sciences. Courses run for three months, year-round; each credit costs $750. The two-teacher school is located at 407 Speers Road, Unit 207, near Dorval Dr. In Oakville, there are presently only twelve full-time and part-time students. "I like how I always have time for students and how I can customize classes to their specific needs," Anna Wronski who teaches at Beaconhouse in Oakville says. "This really helps them excel academically and have the grades needed to get into the university of their choice." It appears to be working: Last year, Rashid said 93 per cent of his students were accepted into the university or college of their choice. He won't be satisfied until that figure reaches 100. Rashid opened the first school shortly after he moved here from Pakistan in 2000. He has been an educator since 1985 and himself has been schooled in four different countries on four different continents. He has also opened Beaconhouse schools in Mississauga and Brampton, where students are also struggling to stand out in their university application. "Everyone should have a chance to succeed in life, not just a selected few. This is a knowledge-based society and people need a degree, even a Master's, to achieve that," Rashid says.
