www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 4, 2009 - 3 Beaver wins five SNA awards The Oakville Beaver has once again been recognized as an award-winning paper, this time facing competitors from across North America. The Beaver received five awards in the recently-held SNA (Suburban Newspapers of America) 2008 Editorial Contest, which received thousands of entries from newspapers across Canada and the United States. The Oakville Beaver tied for first in the Best Features Series with its two- part Is there a doctor in the House? series in November 2007. A front-page shot of Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr hitting a ball out of a sand trap at a charity golf tournament earned photographer Ron Kuzyk a first-place win in the Best Sports Photo category, Reporters David Lea and Krissie Rutherford earned second place in the Best Breaking News Story for their coverage of the Sheridan College lockdown last February. Oakville Beaver Managing Editor Rod Jerred earned a second-place win in the Best Non-Page One Layout category, primarily for his layouts in the Is there a Doctor in the House? features series. Finally, Oakville Beaver summer intern Chris Kornacki finished third in the Best Sports Photography category for his picture, Okay, here's the play, of a Little League pitcher and catcher discussing strategy on the mound during a game. General Manager David Harvey said he's thrilled with the wins. "I am very proud of the team at The Oakville Beaver for winning three SNA Editorial Awards," he said. "It is truly an honour to work with such talented people who deserve this recognition for their creativity and quality of work." Metroland Media Group Ltd.'s Halton Division did particularly well as a group at the SNA awards, with its four papers -- The Burlington Post, Milton Canadian Champion, Flamborough Review and The Beaver -- taking a total of 16 awards in areas including sports photography, editorial writing, election coverage and investigative reporting. As was previously announced, Editor In Chief Jill Davis took the prestigious title of Editor of the Year. A Classic Love Story Join us between Feb. 9-14th for a Special Valentines Day Promotion!
