While he's an expert in the Jewish faith, as he sits for an interview with The Oakville Beaver in one of the pews at St. Simon's, he admits to being a fish out of water in the church. "I don't think I've ever attended a Christian service. I see the candles and the table, but I don't know why they're there," said Wise, pointing to the altar. "I know they use water, but I don't know if they have the host, the Eucharist," he said. So, though Wise is well versed in the Jewish faith, he is as uninformed about Christian traditions as many Christians may be about customs of the Jewish faith. Oakville's Interfaith Council was established in the wake of 9/11 and has since helped build bridges among the many different faith organizations in Oakville. As such, Wise has lectured at St. Simon's previously as part of a speaker exchange program locally. The council has also helped bind local faith communities on common ground, such as social justice issues. Lazerte noted the $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) campaign was launched out of St. Simon's, but faith communities all across Oakville have picked up on fundraising to help fight HIV/AIDS in Africa by raising $1 million, or more, for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. However, this time around, in what is a new venture, Wise will actually be "starring," if you will, in a shared service. While Wise is relatively new to town, taking on the lead of the Shaarei-Beth El Reformed Synagogue in Oakville recently, it was he who invited local faith representatives to his inaugural ceremony. The Rev. Canon Darcey Lazerte, who heads up St. Simon's, attended. "I slipped into the back row and was happy to observe what was going on," said Lazerte. Wise recalled Lazerte when Lazerte invited him for the shared service. "I was honoured to be invited," said Wise. While the two have been sharing components of their faiths and the significance of the customs attached to each service, they have also discovered they like to play hockey. So, not only will they share the stage of the St. Simon's altar in what is being billed a Judeo-Christian service to be held on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m., but they'll be meeting up for some hockey fun at a local arena in their off time. Shaarei-Beth El Reformed Synagogue is the faith home to 125 families from all over Halton. Both St. Simon's and the ShaareiBeth El Reformed Synagogue were founded in Oakville in 1955. Wise said Oakville has about 1,000 Jews, but expects that number to increase as the population grows. Lazerte said St. Simon's began a Lenten study series that looks at all faiths and people really enjoyed it. So, it followed naturally he'd take it a step further, he said, noting it's all about connecting to neighbours and offering information about alternatives -- not that either Wise or Lazerte expect to "convert" anyone, but rather offer an education to their own congregation interested in finding out more about friends and neighbours. The Feb. 8 evening service will be of a different flavour than St. Simon's Sunday morning service, said Lazerte. It will feature Wise as guest preacher. It will also offer more music and less structure than the traditional worship service. Wise will be doing a scriptural reading from the Torah and will be making it in Hebrew. "It will be chanted," he said. Wise will also be recanting a Hebrew prayer, Mi Chamocha (Song at the Sea), which is about the immediate aftermath of the parting of the Red Sea. "It's a hymn, a liturgical prayer that is sung at every service," said Wise. Admitting that his small synagogue has a low profile in Oakville, Wise said it's important for his congregation to partner with other faiths as Oakville becomes more multicultural and diverse. "We want to share with the community what the synagogue is all about," said Wise. Lazerte said the upcoming service will be a celebration, particularly of the similarities of the faiths and the people. The two faith leaders admitted that until the last century, or later, it was seen to be taboo to visit another house of worship, never mind participate in its worship or prayer service. People should not be afraid to go in the door of other faiths to learn about each other and to share why they are each strong in their own beliefs, said Lazerte. Wise is hoping that members of his congregation will attend the service, too. "I'm quite excited. It has created a bit of a buzz," said Lazerte. The service will feature elements from both the Judaic and Christian traditions in an interfaith celebration. St. Simon's Anglican Church is located at 1450 Litchfield Rd.
