www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 6, 2009 - 3 Ward 4 accommodation decision postponed until Feb. 18 By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Halton District School Board trustees have granted the director of education's request to defer a decision on the Ward 4 Oakville elementary schools accommodation issue until Feb. 18. Wayne Joudrie asked trustees to give him more time to revise his recommendations, citing two hours of debate on the topic at the program and accommodation review committee meeting Monday night and the wealth of comments made at the five-and-a-half hour delegation evening last month. Trustees unanimously voted on Wednesday night to delay the decision. "I did some work on it today (Wednesday), but I'm meeting with staff tomorrow to start putting the meat on the bones about any potential revisions," Joudrie said. "I would ask the trustees' indulgence, certainly I gave them a heads up on Monday, that I request a twoweek deferral to the Feb. 18 meeting to give me time to complete that work.... It is my intent to have something on the web, in public and for the board's consideration for mid-next week." This is the second time in less than a month that a decision on Ward 4 Oakville has been deferred. The item was last on the Jan. 21 agenda. The current recommendation would see one single-track French immersion school (Ecole Forest Trail), two dual-track schools (Pilgrim Wood and proposed new school Palermo) and five single-track English schools. A second recommendation is that the school board implement a boundary study if either of the dual-track schools in Ward 4 Oakville exceeds a 60 per cent threshold for French immersion enrolment. The third and final recommendation is that board staff provide a draft Elementary School French Immersion Program Review Process for board consideration by Feb. 2009, with an expected program review completion date of Nov. 2009. Joudrie discussed possible changes to the recommendations at Monday's meeting. One of his suggestions is growing new dualtrack French immersion programs from the primary grades, so that older students would be able to stay at their current schools. He also spoke about alterations to the third recommendation, with the possibility of creating a long-term French as a Second Language Advisory Committee to discuss how the public board delivers French immersion programming across Halton.
