The total smoking ban will be implemented at all three Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) hospitals -- Georgetown, Milton District and Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). HHS plans to launch the countdown to a smoke-free environment on World No Tobacco Day May 31. "As a healthcare organization, it is our responsibility to provide a healthy environment for patient treatment and recovery, and protect everyone from the harmful effects of second hand smoke," said John Oliver, HHS President and CEO. "Going smoke-free is an important preventive measure, which will help promote health and wellness and send an important message to all levels of our organization and our communities about the harmful effects of tobacco." HHS respirologist Dr. Laurence Chau said, "Smoking and exposure to second- and third-hand smoke can cause many diseases and lead to premature death." An HHS task force is working on moving the organization to a totally smoke-free environment. Many neighbouring hospitals have already implemented a total ban. There will be a communication campaign and HHS staff and patients will be told about smoking cessation programs and opportunities. A new smoking policy and enforcement will be developed and there will be a review of the medical management of patients who smoke. Oliver admits making the transition to a completely smoke-free facility will have its challenges.
