We have an adult evening event that breaks the mould and some amazing children's March break camps that are sure to keep little minds active. If your passion is art and you love books just as much, then you cannot miss our one-of-akind event in March. The Novel Idea: An Evening for Book and Art Lovers event will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 6 in the Auditorium and Centennial Gallery, both located at Oakville Public Library, Central Branch. This special event will include a VIP tour of Oakville Galleries' exhibition Novel Ideas before it even opens to the public with curators Marnie Flemming and Gabby Agoncillo. Come and see for yourself how the featured artists have used books to create fascinating works of art -- you'll never look at books the same way again. library staff explore and novels that Oakville read the most in 2008. This fabulous evening is hosted in partnership with Oakville Galleries with sponsors Whole Foods and Trafalgar Brewing Inc. providing appetizers and beverages to enjoy. For kids who love books and art, we are pleased to offer a number of new programs, developed in partnership with Oakville Galleries. Our March Break Week Art & Book Camp runs from March 1620 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is suitable for kids aged six to 12. Children can discover a whole new way of escaping with books as they experiment with making their own novels from scratch. Techniques covered include paper-making, pop-ups, traditional Japanese book-binding and even use recycled books to make collages and sculptures. The Art Attack Camp will take place on March 16 at Central Branch and on March 19 at Woodside Branch from 10 a.m. to noon. This free, drop-in camp is best suited for families with children aged five years and older. Children can make their very own book and play some bookish art games to fill its pages. Do your children fancy a cartooning workshop or discovering how to make an accordion book? On Tuesday, March 17 at Clearview Branch and Thursday, March 18 at White Oaks Branch from 10 a.m. to noon, we are offering a cartooning workshop for children aged six to 12 years. Children can learn how to design a unique comic strip and create their very own funny pages. On Monday, March 16 at Iroquois Ridge Branch from 2-4 p.m. and Friday, March 20 at Glen Abbey Branch from 10 a.m. to noon, This Accordion Tells Tales program will inspire creations and designs for a special double-sided accordion book. Children from six to 12 years of age can learn the unusual technique used to make accordion books -- tunes optional. Whatever your children's interests, there is sure to be something to spark their imagination this March break.
