16 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 21, 2009 www.oakvillebeaver.com Dinner guest is mental health expert Dr. David Goldbloom, one of Canada's foremost experts on mental health, will discuss transformation of mental health care in Canada as speaker at the Canadian Club of Halton Peel dinner on Thursday, March 19. The event will take place at the Oakville Conference Centre on Wyecroft at Bronte roads. He has worked in psychiatry for more than 23 years treating patients, teaching young doctors and schooling the public about mental illness and the stigma that it still carries. A dynamic speaker on this Dr. David Godlbloom issue that is all too rarely discussed, Goldbloom will inform, entertain and challenge the audience as he describes the transformation of mental health care that is taking place in Canada and around the world. New Chilifest to benefit Shifra Home An organization that trains and cares for young, single mothers and their babies is staging a fundraiser this spring. The first Chilifest for Shifra Home is being planned for Saturday, May 23 at Central Arena in Burlington. Organizers of the family-focused event hope 1,500 people will attend. Businesses are invited to be a sponsor. Sponsorships are available at the Platinum level ($3,500), Gold ($2,500), Silver ($1,000), Bronze ($500) and Friend of Chilifest (up to $500). Shifra Home is the first and only maternity residence in Halton. It is in Burlington and provides a safe haven for young, pregnant women with support for the baby and both parents. The Christ-centered charity is open to people of all backgrounds and faiths. Shifra officials say in Halton there are approximately 200 teen pregnancies annually and many of those young women and their boyfriends lack the support and resources to care for a baby. Since August 2006, Shifra Home has helped 31 young women and babies. For more information about the fundraiser or the home, contact Lisa Hoekstra, director of community relations for Shifra Home, by calling 905681-9633 or sending an e-mail to: lisa.hoekstra@shifrahomes.com. Shop for a doctor on new provincial website Oakville residents can now find health care close to home with the click of a mouse. For the first time, information about local health services is available in a single place: www.ontario.ca/healthcareoptions. Using this site, people can find the nearest walk-in and after-hours clinics, urgent care centres, family health teams, general practitioners and Emergency rooms by typing in their postal codes. "I am very excited that the people in my community will have access to this very innovative tool to help them make the right health care choices," said Kevin Flynn, MPP for Oakville. "With this medical services directory health care services may be closer than people think." The new service is being updated regularly and will soon be expanded to offer information on all front-line health services in Ontario including Community Care Access Centres, laboratories and long-term care homes. The government is also introducing Health Care Connect, a new program to help people find a family health care provider. Ontarians can call 1-800-445-1822 to register with the program. Those who need care most will be helped first. "When Ontarians are sick or hurt, their first instinct might be to go to an Emergency room. This service will help them get the care they need, faster and closer to home," said David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. Connecting Ontarians to better health care is part of the McGuinty government's commitment to strengthening Ontario by increasing access to family care and reducing emergency room wait times.
