The Loyola Hawks found the perfect time to finally beat the Assumption Crusaders. Loyola shocked the previously undefeated Crusaders 88-80 Friday in a Halton high school senior boys' basketball AAA/AAAA semifinal contest at Assumption, earning a berth in today's (Wednesday's) regional final at Sheridan College. The victory over Assumption was the Hawks' first in four meetings with the Crusaders this season. Loyola fell to Assumption in league play, then in the AllOntario Catholic qualifying tournament and again at the All-Ontario Catholic championships. Loyola will face the Nelson Lords in the championship game, which is scheduled to tip off at approximately 6 p.m. Nelson upended the two-time defending champion Holy Trinity Titans 57-49 in Friday's other semifinal. The Titans and Crusaders were scheduled to play a AAAA challenge game yesterday (Tuesday) in Burlington to determine the Halton rep for provincial qualifiers. Trinity's juniors weren't denied a trip to Sheridan, however, advancing to the AAA/AAAA title game with a 62-36 win over the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers Friday at Iroquois Ridge. The Titans will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish today at 2:15 p.m. The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders will also play for a Halton title today. Aquinas, which HIGH SCHOOLSPORTS pounded the King's Christian Cavaliers 9442 in Friday's senior A/AA semifinals, will clash with the Aldershot Lions at Sheridan at 4 p.m. The junior A/AA game will feature two Burlington teams, the Lester B. Pearson Patriots and Corpus Christi Longhorns, at 12:30 p.m. Pearson defeated Aquinas 49-25 and Corpus Christi downed King's 43-32 in Friday's semifinals. STA in two volleyball finals As of yesterday afternoon, there was a possibility that all four of tomorrow's (Thursday's) Halton girls' volleyball championship games would feature local teams. Aquinas had already locked up spots in the senior and junior A/AA finals, having won their semifinal contests Monday. The senior Raiders will play the E.C. Drury Spartans at Sheridan tomorrow at 1 p.m., followed by the juniors' match against the Milton District Mustangs (approximate start time of 2:30 p.m.). The AAA/AAAA finalists were determined yesterday (results were not available at press time). The Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils took on Nelson and the Georgetown Rebels faced Notre Dame in the senior finals, while Loyola clashed with Georgetown and Trinity visited Nelson in junior action.
