Join us for "Epilepsy and School - How They Fit" Tuesday, March 3, 2009 7:00pm Oakville Public Library Presentation by: Dr. Elizabeth Kerr, PhD. CPsych. of The Hospital for Sick Children Register at info@epilepsypeel.org 905-450-1900 Integra fundraiser in memory of Steven Hamel The family and friends of an Oakville man killed in a boating accident last year are hosting a fundraiser this Sunday to support Integra, a Toronto based organization that helps children and adolescents dealing with learning disabilities. Steven Hamel, 24, was able to overcome many challenges imposed on him by a learning disability, including learning to read and living on his own, before his tragic end on June 21. Steven's father, Mike Hamel, credits Integra with helping to turn his son into the man he became. "Integra was very significant in Steven's life. He went to this particular camp for two years and they really helped him to develop self-esteem and confidence," said Hamel. "This is a camp that specializes in kids with learning disabilities and they use the kayak as a tool to do just that. We feel we want to give back now because we believe Steven gained so much out of that and he became a really great person with great people skills." The fundraiser to express that thank you will take place at the Oakville Boston Pizza located at 270 North Service Rd W., at 1 p.m. Hamel noted the fundraiser will be made extra special as around 100 of Steven's friends are expected to be present to pick up special Boston Bruins jerseys. "Steven was a huge Boston Bruin fan so the kids have ordered jerseys with his name on the back and on the sleeve it says `In memory of Steven Hamel.' We expect to make a good profit on those that will go to Integra." Hamel also noted that the Boston Bruin players themselves have been involved in the fundraiser, but said the nature of their involvement was a secret that would be revealed during the event. Representatives from Integra will also be on the scene to receive donations. Anyone who wants to support Integra is invited to attend the event. Admission requires the purchase of a Steven Hamel memorial bracelet and while the exact price of that bracelet has yet to be settled on Mike Hamel noted it will be negligible with the money going to Integra. Anyone with any questions about the event can call Hamel at 905-827-8538.
