7 OAKVILLE BEAVER · Friday, March 6, 2009 Crime rate dropped in Halton last year Halton police are reporting a 4.5 per cent drop in the crime rate last year. The statistical summary, put together by the Halton Regional Police Niche system, was examined last week during the police services board meeting. In total, the summary indicated there were 258 fewer criminal offences in Halton in 2008, with 15,268 incidents taking place compared to 15,526 incidents in Violent crime down, but fraud is on the rise 2007. The category of violent crime saw some of the greatest decreases. Non-sexual assaults dropped from 1,740 incidents in 2007 to 1,585 incidents in 2008, while robberies went down from 139 robberies in 2007 to 127 robberies in 2008. The year 2008 also saw auto theft drop by 19.9 per cent, break and enters drop by 13.3 per cent, theft over $5,000 drop by 14.2 per cent, arson drop by 26 per cent, mischief drop by 6.6 per cent and the use of offensive weapons drop by 12.7 per cent. On the other side of the equation, frauds rose 59.6 per cent in 2008 from 854 incidents in 2007 to 1,363 incidents in 2008. Police credited this to the growth of online scams, which previously were not counted under the fraud category by Halton police. The number of sexual assaults increased from 105 in 2007 to 110 in 2008. Possession of stolen goods also went up 7.2 per cent, while theft under $5000 went up 2.6 per cent. Vehicle collisions were up, with 7,989 property damage collisions taking place in 2008 compared to 7,628 collisions occurring in 2007.
