Adrian Volpe's last name hasn't yet been sewn onto the back of his Oakville Blades jersey, but the goaltender was wearing plenty of weight on his shoulders Monday at Joshua's Creek Arenas. Volpe was unexpectedly thrown into action midway through the Blades' playoff game against the Georgetown Raiders after Oakville starter Matt Hache left the contest with an injury. Coming into a scoreless game, and with the Blades needing a win to avoid a 2-0 deficit in the best-of-seven Ontario Junior Hockey League MacKinnon Division championship series, wasn't the ideal time to make a debut. Volpe, however, was up to the challenge. The 18-yearold Burlington native stopped all 17 shots he faced and Kyle Badham scored a pretty second-period goal to lead Oakville to a 2-0 victory, squaring the MacKinnon final at a game apiece. Game 3 is slated for today (Wednesday) at Georgetown's Mold-Master SportsPlex, beginning at 8 p.m. "I just went in and stayed calm, played my game and didn't think too much," said Volpe, an affiliate player who hadn't even practiced -- let alone played -- with the Blades before Monday. "Just make the stop and let the (defencemen) get the rebound. They made it easier out there." Volpe, who dressed as the Blades' backup during several regular-season games but never saw game action, has Ontario Hockey League experience with the Niagara IceDogs and Kitchener Rangers. He played with the junior B Fort Erie Meteors this past season. "(The Blades) called me up when I didn't have games in Fort Erie," Volpe said. "I came here around October and practiced with the team a bit. It's an honour to be here right now on this playoff run with the boys." Hache, however, is expected back in goal tonight for Game 3. The veteran netminder was injured when Georgetown defenceman Jordan Dewey fell into him, and appeared quite groggy when teammates Chris Rocca and Taylor Ferris helped him off the ice. Blades head coach Carlo Coccimiglio suggested the Raiders have gone out of their way to make contact with Hache, referencing another collision in Georgetown's 63 win Saturday in the series opener. "That's part of their game plan, to go after the goalie," said Coccimiglio. "I'm disappointed that's the kind of series they want to have." Dewey was called for goaltender interference on the play, seconds after Oakville's Kellan Lain committed the same infraction at the other end of the ice. "Saying we're going after the goalie is a bit of a stretch, to say the least," Raiders captain Evan Zych said. "We could say the same thing about (Georgetown goalie See Teakle page 19 OAKVILLE SOCCER CLUB www.oakvillesoccer.ca SUMMER SOCCER CAMP PROGRAM WHY CHOOSE THE OAKVILLE SOCCER CLUB SUMMER CAMP?
