7 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, March 11, 2009 Firefighters stand on guard Members of the Oakville Professional Fire Fighters Association (OPFFA) gathered on the bridges over the QEW yesterday, in a tribute to one of Canada's recently fallen soldiers. Shortly after 11 a.m., the vehicle procession carrying the body of Warrant Officer Dennis Brown, 38, passed through the area on the way to St. Catharines for interment. Brown, a reservist with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment and a Special Constable for Niagara Regional Police Service, was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan Tuesday, March 3. The blast also claimed the lives Corporal Dany Olivier Fortin and Corporal Kenneth Chad O'Quinn. "They're fighting for every Canadian, they're fighting for freedom," said Jim Peterson, secretary of the OPFFA. "Whenever someone pays the ultimate price for doing their job, they deserve respect. That's what we're doing here." Peterson noted this is the first time to the OPFFA's knowledge that a procession carrying a fallen soldier has made its way through Oakville's portion of the QEW. A special display seemed appropriate and as such fire trucks gathered at all bridges over the QEW across Oakville -- from Royal Windsor Drive to Burloak Drive. Peterson reported the Third Line and Trafalgar bridges were particularly packed as members of the public joined the firefighters in saying thank you. "Whenever someone pays the ultimate price for doing their job, they deserve respect." Jim Peterson, Oakville Professional Fire Fighters' Association At the Burloak bridge, Oakville firefighters were joined by Burlington firefighters as well as members of the public. "People were just pulling over and standing with us," said Peterson. "It was really something to see." As the procession passed, the fire trucks turned on their flashing lights while their crews stood at attention. Displaying support is particularly important for the OPFFA, as some of their own members are in the reserves. Brown was a married father of four.
