OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, March 13, 2009 · 30 OFSAA hockey: Aquinas boys qualify, Loyola girls fall one step short The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders earned a trip to the provincial high school boys' hockey AA championships Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over the Lester B. Pearson Patriots at Oakville Arena. Brad Gillies scored twice for Aquinas and Josh Ruys added a single in support of goaltender Justin Bailey, who recorded the shutout. Eric Crepinsek, Eric Sapiano and Patterson Farrell drew assists in the win. The Raiders will represent Halton at the OFSAA tournament, scheduled for March 25-28 in Peterborough. "We're not going for fun. We're going to (try and) win," said Aquinas head coach Chris Alderson. "I believe we have the talent and the mindset to go very far. All the coaching staff believes it and I think the kids do too." Alderson said Halton teams generally aren't given a high seed at OFSAA tournaments, due to the fact that Halton is one of the associations that do not allow rep players to play high school hockey. However, he noted the Raiders' ability to play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish tough in last week's regional final -- Notre Dame edged Aquinas 9-8 in overtime -- might catch the organizers' attention. "Notre Dame is ranked fifth in Ontario, and we went toe to toe with them," Alderson said. "We'll have to beat everybody anyway." Hawks' run ends in Hamilton Loyola's girls' hockey team came one step away from qualifying for their OFSAA tournament, falling 5-3 to Bishop Tonnis in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championship game Tuesday in Hamilton. Coming off an emotional 4-3 overtime win over Notre Dame in last week's Halton final, the Hawks surrendered the first five goals of their game against Tonnis before rallying for three late goals. Meghan O'Neill had a pair and Brooke Kotach scored Loyola's other goal. "(Bishop Tonnis) played better than us and they had more talent than we did," said Hawks coach David McNamara. "Everything we did (this year) was on guts and determination. The girls did everything we asked of them all year long. I'm proud of everything they did." McNamara expects his club will be even stronger next season. Loyola will lose five players from this year's team to graduation this spring, including captain Vanessa Savelli. The coach said Savelli and Kotach will both likely play university hockey next season. -- Jon Kuiperij Think Green. Breathe Easy. The Cambridge team of Cali Bartlett, Tangelina Bridges and Tori Pelley won the girls' title with a score of +602. Zurich's Lauren Regier, Heather Hendricks and Cheryl Regier were second with +600. In boys' competition, London's Kohl Warren, Cody Northover and Josh Fenn won with a score of +550. All three bowlers on each team bowled five complete games at the tournament. Points over each bowler's league average were used to determine the amalgamated scores. Each team consisted of one bantam bowler, one junior and one senior. The winners will move on to the youth national championships, to be held in Hamilton. www.oakvillegridiron.com 2009 8-9 Boys & Girls 10-12 Youth 13-14 Youth 15-16 Youth Tackle SCOFL Rep $650 House League $450 Flag NFL $175 Tykes Atom PeeWee Junior Varsity Contact us: 905- 338-2291 #1 WE ARE FOOTBALL!
