OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, March 20, 2009 · 4 United Way adds four new programs to roster of agencies The United Way of Oakville is expanding its network of support to include four new programs. The agencies board of directors recently approved a total of $2,183,894 million in funding to 31 agencies beginning on April 1. The funding is a result of monies raised during the 2008 Campaign. United Way funded agencies will provide more than 60 programs and services to Oakville residents this year. "We saw record campaign increases in 2008 and are simply thrilled to be in a position to support new programs in our effort to build a healthy, caring and inclusive community for all," explained community impact director, Chandra Hardeen. United Way funding initiatives are based on four key priorities: · Strengthen families · Support independence and well-being in seniors · Support those in crisis · Promote self-sufficiency in individuals "All of the agencies and programs we fund are focused on areas identified to have the most need right here in Oakville," Hardeen continued. "Thanks to the generosity and support of our donors, we help initiate solutions to our community's most complex needs such as mental illness, settlement of new immigrants, isolation of seniors, and hunger." Each year the United Way works with volunteers to undergo an agency review process. Each agency application is assessed against United Way of Oakville funding priorities, a third-party outcome measurement, and financial review. Volunteers submit agency recommendations to the board of directors for approval. For 2009, based on recommendations from volunteers, the board of directors approved funding for the following new agencies and programs: · Food for Life Canada--ReFresh Foods Program: A poverty relief organization that picks up and delivers surplus food from wholesalers and retailers and distributes it to housing developments, outreach programs and food banks. · Halton Food for Thought-- Student Nutrition Program: The agency provides a variety of nutrition programs to students in elementary and high schools throughout Halton who would otherwise go hungry. · Oakville Kiwanis-- Meals on Wheels: Meals on Wheels provides nutritious home delivered meals to persons in Oakville who need assistance with their nutritional requirements. In particular this includes the senior's population and those who have just been released from the hospital. · Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services (SAVIS)-- Youth Worker Oakville: SAVIS provides support to survivors of sexual violence through counseling and practical support, as well as education and advocacy activities to the community. "While we are excited to expand our network of support," Hardeen continued, "it is important to note that the amount of funding requested still far exceeds funds available, which makes it impossible to support all of the requests we received for new and increased funding this year." In addition to being a major fund provider to Oakville's social service sector, UWO's Training & Consulting Program offers staff and volunteers throughout the non-profit sector with low-cost professional development workshops and online e-learning.
