OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, March 27, 2009 · 28 EARTH HOUR We're in. Are you? The Town of Oakville is reducing its energy consumption for Earth Hour this Saturday, March 28. For one hour between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., the Town will join communities around world to fight climate change and highlight the importance of energy conservation. The goal is to reduce Oakville's energy consumption by 10 per cent during the hour. Register at www.earthhour.org and during Earth Hour turn out the lights, unplug appliances and have fun! Are you ready for Earth Hour? Cities around the world have prepared for Earth Hour in their own way and the Town of Oakville is no exception. To support this event, the Town will: · Turn off all non-essential lighting at all Town facilities, taking health and safety in consideration. · Dim and reduce lighting at the front counters of facilities that will remain open. · Turn off all marquee signage, where possible. · Implement an Earth Hour schedule to optimize energy consumption in all facilities with a Building Automation System. · The three war memorials in Oakville including Georges Square Cenotaph and Memorial, Trafalgar Memorial and Bronte Memorial will all go dark during the hour. Oakville powering down for Earth Hour Town has implemented many initiatives that save energy today and in the future including: Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) The North Park Quad Pad Arena (currently under construction) will be LEED certified. Energy Management Planning The Town has implemented the Energy and Environmental Management System (EEMS) to measure and monitor energy usage at all Town facilities. Verdiem Surveyor A software program installed on all eligible Town computers that reduces computer energy consumption. It shuts off computers after a period of idle use. Green Light Pact Purchase The Town purchases green energy from Oakville Hydro. Energy Conservation Week: Energy Fair May 23, 2009 The Town will be hosting an event for Oakville residents to learn advice on how to save energy at home on the road and at work.
