E in Tax Credit & Government Rebate $3300 Ten Thousand Villages fundraiser Where people are at the heart of every unique gift, Ten Thousand Villages is proud to be a part of the Sam Travis-Miller Memorial fundraiser. At the young age of fifteen months, Sam was diagnosed with a mysterious and catastrophic illness that required him to undergo three liver transplants. Due to complications following his third transplant, Sam passed away on his 3rd birthday in October 2007. The Sam Travis-Miller Memorial Fund was set up in Sam's honour through the Women's Missionary Society (WMS) of the Presbyterian Church in Canada to benefit children living in the village of Jobat in Central India. The Presbyterian Church has a longstanding relationship with the people of Jobat. While visiting the community of Jobat, Sam's mother Rev. Sarah Travis discovered that some of the children living in the community eat one meal of porridge a day and very little else. These children could not afford to buy even one egg, although eggs are plentiful in the marketplace. Sam's family decided to honour him by helping the children of Jobat "It costs so little to do so much there," Sarah said referring to the eight cents (Canadian) it costs to purchase one egg, the equivalent of about 2.5 Indian rupees. Upon returning back home, Sarah, her husband Paul Miller, and six year old son Ben made it their mission to raise money for the children through donations from church, friends and family. She continues today to find different ways to raise money for the children of Jobat. After hearing the story about the children in Jobat, Frieda Kehler manager of Oakville's Ten Thousand Villages, knew she wanted to be a part of the solution. "We came up with the idea to do the fundraiser through the store," Kehler says. "With Easter right around the corner, we are promoting it as Sam's Egg Fund. On Saturday April 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday April 5, from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m., the Oakville Ten Thousand Villages, along with seven other stores from Toronto, Stratford, New Hamburg, Waterloo and Windsor, will be donating 10 per cent of each purchase to the Egg Fund to help ensure each child in the community of Jobat has the nutrients to live a long, happy life. "The people in the communities are the ones who will make the decisions about how the money is spent," Sarah says. "It's very important for us through Sam's fund that we don't make the decisions. Our relationship with the people in the community has shown us that they can do the work; they are ready, willing and able - they just need a little help." Ten Thousand Villages is no stranger to helping others. This non-profit store along with their volunteers, work hard to provide vital, fair income to Third World people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories throughout North America. Together we can make a difference. For more information on how you can help this great cause visit www.tenthousandvillages.ca, call the store at 905-337-2377, or stop by the store at 226 Lakeshore Rd., East on Saturday, April 4 or Sunday, April 5 (at the Oakville location only) to do your part in changing the lives of the children of Jobat.
