OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 10, 2009 · 2 Police hope tips will reduce residential break-ins In the wake of numerous break and enters, particularly in Oakville and Milton, Halton police are offering the following tips, which will allow residents to minimize their risk of being victimized. As jewelry has been one of the main targets of these break and enters, police are advising residents to store valuable jewelry, particularly family heirlooms, in a safe, secure and hidden location. This goes for large amounts of cash, as well. A safety deposit box is the preferred location to store such valuables. Electronic equipment has been another target of these thefts, which is why police advise residents to maintain an up-to-date list of all valuable electronic equipment including make, model and serial number for each item. This list will allow police to know that a particular item is yours, if it's recovered. The list should be stored somewhere other than on a personal computer. To prevent thieves from getting in in the first place, a home's exterior doors should be as secure as possible with up-to-date locking systems. Police note all of the recent residential break and enters have occurred during the day with the thieves choosing homes they believe are unoccupied. To reduce the likelihood of being targeted, police ask that residents ensure their home does not show obvious signs of being empty, such as uncollected newspapers or mail. For additional crime prevention tips, residents are encouraged to visit the Halton Regional Police Service website at www.hrps.on.ca. The safety and security tips can be found under the community policing tab on the home page. Residents without Internet access, can contact their nearest police division within Halton Region and ask to speak to the Community Support Officer. Police remind residents that the thieves seem to be watching homes to determine when the owner leaves and as such police ask that any suspicious people or vehicles on a street be reported to police at 905-878-5511. The Halton Regional Police Service is committed to solving these residential break and enters. Anyone with information about them is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777, ext. 2215 or the Milton Criminal Investigations Bureau at ext. 2415 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-TIPS (8477).
