Four sites compete for gas-fired power plant Four companies competing to build and operate a combined-cycle, natural gasfired power plant have settled on four possible locations to build it, including one in Oakville. If successful in its bid TransCanada will establish the Oakville Generating Station at 1500 Royal Windsor Dr., in Oakville. If Invenergy Canada Development is successful it will create the Avon Energy Centre at 445 Hazelhurst Rd., in Mississauga. Should Northland Power Inc., outbid the others the natural gas-fired power 7 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 10, 2009 One potential site in southeast Oakville, remaining three in nearby Mississauga plant will take the form of the Royal Windsor Energy Centre, located at 2400 and 2430 Royal Windsor Dr., in Mississauga. Finally if the Southdown Station Partnership (made up of Sithe Global Power Southdown and Global Power Southdown) is successful the development of Southdown Station will take place at 759-797 Winston Churchill Blvd., in Mississauga. Whoever wins the contract will be in control of an 850-megawatt power plant, which is being created to serve the electricity needs of the rapidly growing southwestern GTA. The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has predicted that the ability of existing infra- structure to supply this area's energy needs will fall short by 2015, despite aggressive conservation measures and increased renewable energy sources. Generating power locally ensures a secure and dependable supply. The plant will also support the province's phase out of coal-fired generation, which the OPA said is the single largest source of air pollution in Ontario. A decision on who gets to build the power plant is now expected for August with the plant itself expected to be operational by late December of 2013.
