Somani More than 10 million Canadians suffer from seasonal allergies, and 55% of them admit that allergies cut into their productivity. How do I know if I have seasonal allergies? Seasonal allergies strike soon after winter comes to a close and can sometimes be mistaken for the common cold since symptoms are so similar. Common symptoms include runny nose, itchy & watery eyes, dry cough, headaches, sneezing and even sleep disturbances. However, symptoms of seasonal allergies typically persist longer than the average cold duration of 7 to 10 days. What can I do to lessen my symptoms? Michael Fanous, Pharmacy Manager at PharmaSense Oakville, says there are a number of simple ways to reduce the impact of seasonal allergies. First, limit your exposure by staying indoors. Avoid the early morning and early evening hours when pollen peaks. Avoid physical exertion when pollen counts are high and breathe through your nose, not your mouth. "Especially when exerting ourselves, we often resort to breathing in through our mouths. This allows all the allergens in! Instead, breathe through your nose it acts as a filter to keep allergens out," says Fanous. Second, know your stuff: Learning a little about seasonal allergens can help you control your symptoms. Check for weather & pollen forecasts and adjust your outdoor activity accordingly. Finally, see your doctor or pharmacist. People with seasonal allergies are up to three times more likely to develop asthma. If your seasonal allergies are hard to control, make an appointment to see your doctor or talk to your pharmacist. They can recommend appropriate treatment including overthe-counter or prescription medication if necessary.
