Six major regional roads projects got the preliminary go ahead by Halton Region council's planning committee Wednesday with no debate. "We have just approved in 28 seconds $75 million of road reconstructions," marvelled Burlington regional Councillor Jack Dennison. Actually, the total budget is just over $71 million, and regional council still has to give final approval at its meeting April 22, but Dennison's impression that fast-growing Halton is now spending big-time dollars on roads is correct. However, all of the roads projects have been in the planning stages for years with much of the funds coming from development charges, noted Milton regional Councillor Barry Lee. "I think Jack was being a little flippant there," he noted. The proposed projects include: · At the Burlington/Oakville border, the widening to four lanes of Upper Middle Road and Burloak Drive from west of Sutton Drive to the QEW, with a radial curve connecting the two streets as opposed to the current tee intersection. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer and end October 2010, with a budget of $19.4 million. · In Oakville, the widening to four lanes of Upper Middle Road between Postmaster Drive and Bronte Road. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer and end November 2010, with a budget of $13.1 million. · Also in Oakville, the continued widening to six lanes of Dorval Drive, this time from south of Wyecroft Road to south of Speers Road. Construction is set to begin this summer and end by November, with a budget of $2.6 million. · In Milton, the widening of Derry Road to four lanes between Bronte Street and Tremaine Road. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer and end in November, with a budget of $13 million. A $17 million grade separation of Derry and the CNR tracks is not in the Region's capital budget forecast until 2015 and 2016. · Also in Milton, the westward expansion of James Snow Parkway in the Escarpment Business Community industrial zone north of Hwy. 401 and west of Regional Road 25. The small extension is set to begin in late spring and finish by December, at a cost of $4.2 million. · In Burlington, the widening to six lanes of both Appleby Line from just south of Taywood Drive to Hwy. 407 and Dundas Street from the CNR overpass to half a kilometre west of Appleby Line. The project also includes a realignment of a branch of Sheldon Creek. Construction is scheduled to begin in late summer and last until spring, 2011, with a budget of $18.7 million.
