11 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Saturday, May 2, 2009 Announcement brought tears of joy Continued from page 6 components, tourism destinations while celebrating Lakeview's important heritage of contribution to the GTA, Ontario and Canada. This is the opportunity that the Provincial Government has recognized and that the City of Mississauga saw when council unanimously adopted Resolution 0048 on Feb. 27, 2008 that "encourages staff to commence planning for the redevelopment of Lakeview as a diverse, multi-facetted community for the 21st century." When Energy Minister George Smitherman made his announcement on July 16, 2008 that Lakeview's future in power generation was over; we cried tears of joy, and tears of sorrow. We knew then, that this day would come, that another community would be asked to take the burden. Lakeview knows what that burden entails, 112 years of military, industrial and utility pollution have taught us well. My unbiased review concludes there should be no power plants anywhere in the southwest GTA. Lakeview will continue to contribute our share, but for the first time since 1891, we will regain the heart of our community, access to our waterfront and a healthier future for our children. We wish you all the same.
