The regional health department said yesterday (Tuesday) that it had received laboratory confirmation that a Halton resident has tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus. Laboratory testing confirmed that the H1N1 flu virus is the same as the one circulating in Mexico and the United States. The Toronto Star reported on its website yesterday that the student attends Christ the King Secondary School in Georgetown. "It is possible that some other students at this school may have been exposed. Students and their parents/guardians should watch for symptoms," the Star said was part of the wording in a letter to parents from the Halton Region Health Department. "Halton Region's first confirmed case is a student who is recovering at home," Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region's medical officer of health, said in a news release yesterday. "We are continuing to work closely with the local health care community as well as various government agencies to monitor and investigate possible cases in Halton." Nosal would not give the name, age, gender or grade of the student or identify the school or the municipality the school is in citing, in part, patient confidentiality. He said the student had not travelled to Mexico recently and that the patient's case is considered a mild form of the illness.
