Bright rides bike for kids The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride is still more than a month away, but one Oakville participant has already hit the ground running by holding a fundraiser for the cause. River Oaks native, Steve Bright, 39, is joining 35 other national riders who will journey 6,800 kilometres in 12 days in a bid to raise $2 million for charities that improve quality of life for kids living with cancer. To get the ball rolling, Bright is attempting to raise $25,000 with a fundraiser on Friday at the Burloak Canoe Club, located at 160 Water St. The event begins at 7 p.m. While the journey from Vancouver to Halifax is immense, it will not be Bright's first large-scale biking adventure. At age 22, Bright and a friend biked from Banff to Vancouver, crossing 1,100 kilometres in 12 days. Work and participation in the field of charity bike rides followed, culminating in the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride, to take place on June 13. "I came to know of the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride by participating in the Tour for Kids in Ontario -- four days of cycling and camaraderie with friends, old and new," said Bright on the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride website. "I then volunteered to help organizers with some marketing and public relations for the inaugural ride, watching in emotional amazement when the national riders pulled into Toronto on a hot June afternoon last year. It was so inspiring I became a national rider myself this year." Bright noted he was participating in the ride because his family has been touched by cancer too many times and because he wants to help kids in these dire situations survive their battles with the disease.
