5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 7, 2009 H1N1 flu hits second Halton student A second Halton student has tested positive for the H1N1 flu. The news of the second case broke just 24 hours after the regional health department announced Halton's first case of the H1N1 flu virus on Tuesday. Laboratory testing has confirmed that the H1N1 flu virus is the same as the one circulating in Mexico and the United States. "The region's second confirmed case is also a student," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region's Medical Officer of Health. "There appears to be no direct link between the two individuals as they are from different schools and different communities within the region. The Health Department has worked closely with school officials to notify parents and staff at the student's school. The student is recovering at home." Although the Region would not reveal the communities where the two students reside, it was widely reported the first case was a student of Christ the King Secondary School in Georgetown. Public health nurses will contact the school on a regular basis to ask about students and staff members who may be away and why. If an individual is sick and has flu-like symptoms, health department officials may decide to do follow up contact with the person or their family. "It is likely that there will be further cases in our region," added Dr. Nosal. "Regardless of where individuals go to school or work, proper infection control practices are key to help prevent the spread of illness." These practices include frequent hand washing with soap and warm water, covering coughs and sneezes with your sleeve, and staying home if you are sick. If you have a fever and a cough and need to seek medical attention, call your family physician or Telehealth Ontario at 1866-797-0000 or TTY 1866-797-0007.
