15 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 8, 2009 Emerald Ash Borer prevents wood going in or out of Halton The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has prohibited the movement of all firewood and ash tree products in or out of Halton in a bid to contain the Emerald Ash Borer. The borer is a metallic greencoloured beetle responsible for killing millions of ash trees in northern United States and Canada since it was discovered near Detroit in 2002. Introduced to North America from East Asia, the adult nibbles at a trees' foliage, but causes little damage. Its larva feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients. The presence in Oakville was confirmed in July 2008 in the vicinity of Eighth Line and Falgarwood. In North America, the borer has no natural predators and as such the spreading of the insect is difficult to control particularly when humans transport infected wood and thereby introduce the borer to a new area. To prevent this, firewood from all species of trees can no longer be moved into or out of Halton. This order also applies to all ash tree products such as nursery stock, logs, branches and wood chips. "The Emerald Ash Borer poses a serious threat to our forest cover as there are 176,000 ash trees in Oakville, which represents approximately nine per cent of our urban forest," said John McNeil, Oakville's manager of forestry and cemetery services. "I urge all residents to learn about the Emerald Ash Borer and obey the ministerial order. By not moving or transporting ash products or firewood of any kind, we can limit the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer." As stopping the spread of the borer is currently seen as the best way of dealing with it, residents who move any of the listed materials into or out of the region, without prior permission from the CFIA, could face fines and/or prosecution. The Town of Oakville will begin planting new trees this year in areas with an abundance of ash trees. A treatment of selected ash trees with Tree Azin -- an organic pesticide approved under the provincial pesticide ban -- will occur for the second year. It should provide two years protection. The Town is also continuing an inventory project to identify trees at risk from the borer. "If you need firewood, buy it locally. If you're going to a cottage or campsite, buy your wood there and burn it all before you leave. Moving a single piece of infested wood could have serious consequences, said McNeil. Residents can also help by being vigilant in watching for the borer and contacting the CFIA if any are spotted.
