17 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 8, 2009 Region hosting affordable housing meetings A regional task force is inviting the public to submit ideas at two upcoming meetings on how it can create more affordable housing in Halton. The input will be reviewed by the Housing Task Force as it works on a plan to be released later this year offering recommendations for developing potential housing projects in the short term, including costs, potential sites and development models. The task force was created last November to augment the Region's Housing Strategy, which has struggled to meet targets to build more social housing. Approved by council in 2006, the Housing Strategy envisioned the creation of 800 affordable housing units by 2015. In 2007, council approved two projects with a total 120 units, mostly targeted to seniors, to be ready for occupancy in 2010. The first public meeting is on Thursday, May 14 from 6-9 p.m. at the Halton Hills council chambers, 1 Halton Hills Dr. in Georgetown. The second will be held Thursday, May 21 from 6-9 p.m. at the Halton regional council chambers, located at 1151 Bronte Road in Oakville. Residents or organizations that wish to delegate can pre-register by calling Paul Gregory at Halton Region at 905-825-6000, ext. 4423, toll free at 1-866-442-5866, TTY at 905-827-9833, or by e-mailing Paul.Gregory@halton.ca.
