OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 8, 2009 · 24 Eating well and being active is good for you Most of us know that good nutrition and physical activity are important for the waistline, but did you know that they can affect your mental health? Shari-Lynn Abdallah knows this first hand. She started taking a closer look at what she was eating while being treated for anxiety and depression several years ago. "I wanted an alternative to medication," Abdallah says. "I started to experiment with foods I'd never tried before, I drank more water, and I decreased caffeine and carbohydrates and increased fruits and vegetables." According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), what we put on our plates becomes the raw material for our brains to manufacture the chemical substances that control our sleep, mood and behaviour. At the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), nutrition is so important that registered dietitians work right alongside therapists and medical staff. They help clients develop healthy eating habits to promote effective regular physical activity treatment and recovery. The CMHA also points to appears as effective as psyresearch that shows that chotherapy for treating mild to moderate depression, and that people who exercise report feeling less stressed and nervous. Both CAMH and the CMHA are partners of Choices 4 Health, a community coalition of more than 250 individuals and organizations working together to create a Halton in which people achieve optimum health by choosing opportunities for healthy eating, physical activity, good mental health, and tobacco-free living. Lifestyle changes helped Abdallah fight her depression. But, she cautions, it's not a quick fix. "Pick one thing you're going to change and do it for three weeks. Then try another, and so on." In 2002, Health Canada reported that one in five Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Mental Health Week takes place May 4 to 10. Choices 4 Health is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion, and supported by community partners and the Halton Region Health Department. -- Submitted by Choices 4 Health 15 #401 Britiannia Rd W Eglinton Ave Saturday & Sunday Only! sale weekend spectacular % EVERYTHING in the store Including previously marked down products OFF #403 Erin Mills Pkwy Mississauga Rd #10 QEW #427 Square One Mall #410 #407 N Mississauga 4561 Hurontario Street, Unit #2 South East Corner of Hwy #10 & Eglinton Stoney Creek 410 Lewis Road & the South Service Road Located in Stoney Creek Decor Centre SEE STORE FOR DETAILS.
