Kenyan wins Oakville 5K trail race Kenyan long-distance running specialist Daniel Mburu was the overall winner of Monday's first Oakville stage of the Beat the Recession Race Series. Mburu, winner of the 2008 Toronto Marathon, finished the fivekilometre trail race in a time of 17:16. Greg McNab finished second with a time of 19:04, while Erik Labelle was third in 19:30. Twenty-one runners participated in the run, which was held in the Sixteen Mile Creek area. Age-group winners were Labelle (men 13-18), Mburu (men 19-29), Julie Farell (women 19-29), McNab (men 30-39), Aimee Kondratt (women 30-39), Paul Gonsalves (men 40-49), Margaret Mah (women 40-49) and John Carroll (men 60plus). Both the King's Christian Collegiate Cavaliers and St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders are undefeated two weeks into the season, including a 1-1 tie against each other Wednesday at King's. The Cavaliers, who downed Aquinas 3-1 in the 2008 Halton final and went on to win gold at the provincial A championships, were heavily outplayed in the first half Wednesday but managed to tie the game early in the second half. Star striker Cameron Eisses, a member of the Toronto Lynx junior team who scored all three goals for KCC in last year's Halton final, converted a long free kick to tie the contest. Aquinas had chances to win the game late, the best coming when Francesco Cardillo drilled a shot off the goal post with five minutes to go. Cardillo had provided the Raiders' firsthalf goal, knocking home a rebound in the crease after KCC keeper Ben Stewart had made two brilliant saves. "It was a good game, we just didn't cash in on our chances," said Aquinas coach Gino DiMarcello. Raiders co-captain Matthew Kupisz was assigned with shadowing Eisses throughout the game, and said the tactic paid off. "We know what he did last year. Shutting him down was our number one priority," he said. Fielding mostly Grade 11 players, the Raiders will be led by midfielders Kupisz, Cardillo and James Langlois this season, DiMarcello said. KCC also features a young team, losing seven members of last year's OFSAA championship squad. "I would never say it's a rebuilding year, but it's a different year," said coach Mike Zietsma. "We have a very good crop of Grade 9s coming in, with three or four starting already." Grade 12 transfer student Jeff Findley is also new this year, and will be relied upon to anchor a young defence. Despite the turnover, Eisses said the team's goal is to win another OFSAA title. "Last year, there was no pressure. We were ranked 16th (at OFSAA) and just showed up," he said. "Hopefully we can do it again."
