PLUM fresh RIDE programs on roads this weekend The first summer long weekend is coming and the police will be out in force to make sure it goes smoothly on the roads. Halton police are participating in Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign, which attempts to make Canada's roads the safest in the world. Lasting from May 12-18, the road safety week will focus on behaviours that reduce risks for drivers and passengers such as sober and alert driving, seat belt use and refraining from aggressive driving. "Anyone can become a victim of unsafe driving whether by direct involvement or when a loved one is affected," said Chief Gary Crowell, Halton police. "Police agencies across the country are collaborating on this project because they have seen this kind of devastation and because they know that the involvement of the driving public is essential to achieve safer streets and highways." Halton has not proven immune from this devastation with 15 deaths and more than 1,200 serious injuries in 2008 related to vehicle collisions. In Oakville, the road safety week will be honoured with RIDE programs on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16. Project ERASE (Eliminating Racing on Streets Everywhere) will also be deployed. Finally the 911 `Safe Roads...Your Call' project, which encourages citizens to report drunk drivers, will be coming out the week of May 18.
