The fire department's first recommendation is to leave the fireworks displays to the people who know what they are doing. "Family fireworks or informal neighbourhood displays are not recommended," said Ontario Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "Instead, families and friends are urged to attend fireworks displays organized by professionals. Fireworks are extremely dangerous and should be left to the specialists who are trained to handle and discharge them safely." For those planning a trip to cottage country the Oakville Fire Department is also recommending the purchase of new smoke alarms and batteries in case the alarms at the cottage in question need to be replaced. If the cottage has a fuelburning appliance a carbon monoxide detector is encouraged. The owners of recreational vehicles and campers are urged to test smoke alarms in their vehicles prior to leaving for their trip. Other important fire tips this weekend include, knowing the telephone number for the closest fire department at the vacation location, knowing the cottage's emergency sign number and location, keeping barbecue lighters and matches out of the sight and reach of children and checking with the local fire department about regulations regarding fireworks and open air burning.
