OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 15, 2009 · 30 Sing along at Glen Abbey By Mary Lynn O'Shea SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER A moment in time If you love music, you are invited to join in Anne Marie's Open Mic and Sing Along at Glen Abbey United Church on Saturday, May 30. And no one should be concerned about musical ability, nerve or experience, as the emphasis is on fun, said the church music director, who is hosting the event. "This is a very welcoming, intergenerational evening," said Anne Marie Leonard. "It's a feel good experience where everybody has a smile on their face." The event will take place from 7:3010 p.m. in the church gym at 1469 Nottinghill Gate. Admission at the door is $10. Music will include rock and roll, country, jazz, pop, classical and opera, or anything else you would like to contribute. You'll hear the Glen Abbey combo, featuring guitars, drums, sax and trumpet, and Anne Marie at the piano. Songbooks will be provided for everyone to join in and participants can also bring their own music. "Anything you bring, we will sightread or you can also sit in with the group or do your own thing," said Leonard. As well as singing, the evening will feature games, such as musical chairs, name that tune, music trivia and a limbo contest. "The enthusiasm is really wonderful," said Leonard, who has led numerous open mic events. "And winning silly prizes makes everyone's day." There will be lemonade and snacks, including home baking, to help keep up the energy level. The evening has a beach theme to celebrate the beginning of summer, so appropriate beachwear is encouraged. The Glen Abbey United Church choir will be singing a Beach Boys medley to help set the mood. "I love Open Mic because each one is fresh," said Leonard. "You don't know who will be singing or playing what, and there's always a great variety." Leonard has an extensive musical background beginning with piano at the age of three. Her experience ranges from touring the U.S. with the New Vaudeville Band to regular gigs at the Royal York and King Edward Hotels. She has also played for the Duke and Duchess of York, so she is ready for whoever shows up on May 30 for her Open Mic and Sing Along.
