ERIC RIEHL / SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Players say Mason is NHL's top rookie One of three finalists for the National Hockey League's rookie-of-the-year award, Steve Mason has the support of his peers. Sporting News magazine named the Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender as its NHL rookie of the year last week, as Mason beat out highscoring forwards Bobby Ryan and Kris Versteeg in voting by 292 NHL players. If history is any guide, Mason should like his chances of taking home the Calder Trophy as the Steve Mason NHL's top rookie when the league holds its annual awards night next month in Las Vegas. Nine of the past 11 Sporting News rookie-of-the-year award winners have received the Calder, which is voted on by professional hockey writers. Mason, a graduate of Abbey Park High School, led the NHL this past season with 10 shutouts and ranked second in goals-against average with a 2.29 mark. He led the Blue Jackets to the franchise's first-ever playoff appearance. Ryan (Anaheim Ducks) led all NHL rookies in scoring with 31 goals and 57 points, while Versteeg (Chicago Blackhawks) was the top set-up man among freshmen (31 assists).
