OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 20, 2009 · 26 Weekend losses drop Buzz to .500 on Jr. B lacrosse season By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR The Victoria Day long weekend was an especially long one for the Oakville Buzz. Oakville fell to .500 on the junior B lacrosse season with a pair of losses, dropping a 9-8 overtime decision to the two-time Founder's Cup national champion Six Nations Rebels Friday and falling 10-6 to the Orangeville North Stars the following night. The loss to Six Nations was particularly crushing, considering the Buzz had built a 73 second-period lead against the powerful Rebels and looked to be on its way to a confidence-building victory. "We started out really well... had our power play working, everything was going right. Then it felt like the guys kind of put it in neutral to protect the lead, instead of keeping going," said Buzz head coach and general manager Ken Gillies. "What inevitably happens in those situations is the other team hits their stride." Six Nations pulled within 7-4 before the second intermission, then scored the only three goals of the third period to force overtime. After both teams scored once to make it 9-9, the Rebels' Jeremy Johns netted the winner with 30 seconds to go in the extra session, capitalizing on a rebound. "That was a tough loss. We really felt we should have won that game," Gillies said. "We're a little young and (the Rebels) seem to know it's a long game. They were able to play for 60 minutes, and we haven't learned to do that yet." That loss might have carried over into Saturday's game in Orangeville, where the Buzz allowed five of the first six goals. Oakville cut the North Stars' lead to 6-5 early in the third period, but Orangeville broke the game open with four straight markers and coasted to the win. Gillies admitted he didn't expect his team to own a pedestrian 4-4 record eight games into the season, but he did anticipate some early struggles. "We've had a few injuries, plus we've missed a couple guys (Dylan Gilbert and Nick Soubry) that had to go back to university again to play for club championships," he added. "We just haven't had a set lineup, it seems, this year, as opposed to previous years when we've had most of our guys around. "We're not that far off. Not that we're comfortable with where we're at, but once we get everyobdy back and start playing a bit better, we should be alright." Having dropped three of its past four games, the Buzz will look to get back on track Friday when it visits the Hamilton Bengals. The Bengals are tied with the Buzz for fourth in the Ontario Lacrosse Association's South West Division, though Oakville has two games in hand. Making Friday's contest even more crucial for the Buzz is the fact its next game will be against the 7-0 Windsor AKO Fratmen -- not an ideal opponent when you're trying to snap a losing streak. "Windsor will be a tough challenge, but Hamilton's a game we really need," Gillies said. BUZZ BITS: Mark Dawson scored twice and added four assists for the Buzz Friday, while Connor Gamble also scored twice. Justin Beatty, Jamie Elliott, Alex Kruse and Spencer Gallant had Oakville's other goals... Gallant (two), Mark White, Jake Jagodkin, Elliott Cowburn and Gamble found the net for the Buzz Saturday... Oakville's next home game is slated for Friday, May 15, when it will host Hamilton at Glen Abbey. Kevin Lee provided the offence for the A's in the opening game, driving home all three of Oakville's runs. Lee hit a tworun homer in the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2, then knocked home the winner with a single in the seventh, making a winner of reliever Marc Walton. Gord Robertson started the game for Oakville, allowing two runs (one earned) in six-and-athird innings. In the nightcap, the A's erased a 4-3 seventh-inning deficit with a pair of unearned runs and held on for the victory. Carter Buchanan's single tied the game 4-4, and Jeff Jarockis hit a sacrifice fly two batters later to score Matt Griffin with the winning run. A's starter Alex Hawley survived a rough opening inning, when Brampton reached him for three funs, to pitch deep into the game. Matt Chisamore earned the win in relief despite allowing an unearned run in the top of the seventh. A's now 4-1 The victories improved Oakville's season mark to 4-1, good for second in the Len Andrews Division behind the 5-1 Erindale Cardinals. The A's will take on the 3-0 St. Catharines Metros tomorrow (Thursday) in St. Catharines, and return home May 25 to host the Glanbrook Grizzlies. - Skating and edging skills Puck handling & Shooting skills Passing & Pass reception skills 3 on 3 games or 4 on 4 games Relay races / individual & team competitions For registration forms / instructor bios contact: Paul Jeffrey · 416-573-7314 Andy Pritchard · 905-483-5806 apjsportsgroup@cogeco.ca
