OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 21, 2009 · 10 YOUR POOL IS OUR REPUTATION Complete Pool Packages By Angela Blackburn OTHS Relay for Life hopes to raise $90,000 the track in the emotional event. Then, teams will take over as they circle the track throughout the night -- from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. "The event is all night from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and supports cancer survivors and raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society," said Walton. At 10 p.m., there will be a luminary walk where the track will be lined with candles. "The event as a whole is a very moving and powerful experience," said Walton. Between 9-10 p.m. Zumba dance instructors will help keep everyone awake and yoga instructors from Lululemon will help wake up relayers on Saturday for the closing ceremonies. This marks OTHS' third annual Relay for Life. Last year about 650 people were involved and $93,000 was raised. Walton hopes attendance will be higher this year as 700 people are registered and guest passes will be available for family, friends and community members for a $10 donation. It's hoped nearly $100,000 will be raised. Walton said she and Leinigen got involved with the event in Grade 9 when it was organized by other Grade 12 students and have carried it on. It's why, what began as school involvement in Grade 9, has become an annual tradition for the now Grade 12 student. "I've lost a couple of friends and seen people diagnosed. Nothing directly has hit me, but over the years I've learned to appreciate it," said Walton, who is now co-chairing OTHS' 2009 Relay for Life with Nadia Leiningen, Grade 12 and Nisha Howarth, Grade 11. The event is this Friday, May 22 at the high school at 1460 Devon Rd. That's where participants -- some 700 are expected -- will work in teams of 10, pitch tents, walk the track and camp out to fight back against cancer. As with all Relay for Life events, it will begin with a Survivor's Lap.
