OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 29, 2009 · 22 Restaurateur to ride for cancer research Oakville's Paradiso Restaurant owner and resident, Stephane Sauve will ride this summer in this year's Ride to Conquer Cancer event, benefiting The Jewish General Hospital. With a personal goal of raising $3,200 (the minimum amount is $2,500), this first time participant will join thousands as they ride over two hundred kilometers from Montreal to Quebec City, lasting from July 10-12. Both he, Paradiso's Burlington owner, Mike Ortenzi, and friend Clifford Pelhap will take on the journey this summer, with Sauve and Ortenzi being motivated by individual parents -- Sauve's dad, and Ortenzi's mother -- who have been affected by the disease. "Think about it, over 2.4 per cent of men and 2.7 per cent of women in Canada will have to fight cancer at one point in their life. It's huge and we need to do something about it," said Sauve. "According to the National Cancer Institute of Canada, over 153,100 new cases of cancer and 70,400 deaths from cancer were estimated to occur in 2006. Men outnumber women for new cases by 5 per cent and mortality by 11 per cent. That's why I'm riding. To do something big about cancer." With nearly $2,415 already raised, he is asking on Oakville to help him reach his personal goal of $3,200. There is no doubt that wife, Anita, and son, Max, will be rooting for him at the end. Specials are currently being held at either Paradiso restaurants to further raise proceeds for their participation. To sponsor Stephane, visit http://www.conquercancer.ca and click "Donate" to search for Stephane. Asking for donations around $50$100, Sauve sends a reminder and message out to the Town of Oakville. "Please keep in mind the commitment I'm making to end this heartbreaking disease and the personal efforts I'll have to make to accomplish this." Paradiso, the restaurant with "a Mediterranean soul with an eclectic attitude" -- as they describe -- is located at 125 Lakeshore Rd. E., and along with an outdoor patio, also offers cooking classes. Visit their website at www.paradisorestaurant.com for more info, or at 905338-1594 for more info on the specials.
