The event included official speeches, a French music concert, reunion lunch and the interactive clown show presented by Clowns without Borders. The Halton District School Board has named Brantwood, E.J. James and Linbrook as the elementary schools recommended to be closed to address declining student enrolment in southeast Oakville. This will leave three elementary schools operating south of Cornwall Road, including Maple Grove, New Central and Chisholm, as well as the already approved new school in Clearview, effective September 2010. This option is not one of the original six alternatives presented by the board in February, but rather a hybrid that came out of community input, according to Wayne Joudrie, director of education. "We followed a consultation process that included surveys and focus groups and meetings with groups within the community," said Joudrie in an interview with The Oakville Beaver yesterday. "We saw many hybrids from the surveys and focus groups, and most were not viable, but there were three or four that we studied more closely to come up with these hybrids, including this one." The proposed school closures are part of a recommendation that will be introduced as a notice of motion at tonight's (Wednesday) board meeting. Trustees are expected to vote on the motion at the regular board meeting on Wednesday, June 17. A public meeting to present the current recommendation will be held tomorrow, Thursday, June 4, at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of Oakville Trafalgar High School, 1460 Devon Rd. The evening will feature a presentation, as well as a question and answer period. Joudrie and Superintendent Stuart Miller will run the meeting.
