The Eagles, who have enjoyed plenty of success at the last few OFSAA meets, have qualified eight entries for this week's provincial championships in Toronto. Leading the medal hopefuls are the school's open girls' and boys' 4x400-metre relay teams, both of which easily won their races at last weekend's South Region meet in St. Catharines. Corinne Smith, Jessica Tat, Brooke Johnston and Jade Johnson combined to finish the girls' race in 4:03.05, more than six seconds ahead of second-place Highland Dundas. The Eagles' boys' team of Michael Trnkus, Connor Mabbott, Scott Dunford and Brandon Musselman finished its race in 3:29.58, 1.55 seconds faster than Ridgeway-Crystal. Abbey Park also won two individual gold at regionals. Dan Mathie won the junior boys' 1,500m race, while Smith crossed the line first in the senior girls' 400m. St. Thomas Aquinas' Colleen Hennessy was the other local athlete to win an event at the South Region championships, finishing first in the senior girls' 1,500m. Top-four finishers in each event at regionals qualified for the provincial meet, which will begin Thursday and conclude Saturday at the University of Toronto. Trnkus (second in senior boys' 200m and 400m), Mathie (second in junior boys' 800m) and Nathaniel Green (fourth in senior boys' 3,000m) qualified in additional events for Abbey Park. Hennessy also qualified in a second event, placing second in the senior girls' 3,000m. Other local runners to qualify for OFSAA were Loyola's Paulina Maher (second in open girls' 1,500m steeplechase), Megan O'Neill (second in senior girls' 400m) and Alicia Knox (fourth in senior girls' 3,000m), T.A. Blakelock's Devon Bosada (fourth in midget girls' 400m), Iroquois Ridge's Claire Segeren (fourth in midget girls' 800m) and Oakville Trafalgar's Karina Sils (third in senior girls' 3,000m). Five more Oakville athletes narrowly missed qualifying for provincials. Blakelock's Karley Donnelly, MacLachlan College's Lewis Kent, White Oaks' Alexia Edwards and Aquinas' Kelly Hennessy and Justine Fram all posted fifth-place finishes at regionals. -- See page 25 for a list of top-five finishers at the South Region meet NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER MEDAL HOPEFULS: Jessica Tat (left), Brooke Johnston and the Abbey Park Eagles open girls' 4x400-metre relay team should be in medal contention at this week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track-and-field championships.
