OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, June 5, 2009 · 42 Indoor finalists More medals for van Koeverden Adam van Koeverden won two World Cup medals on the weekend in Poznan, Poland, taking a silver medal Saturday in the K-1 (kayak singles) 500-metres and adding a bronze in the 1,000m Sunday. Van Koeverden finished second in the 500m to Sebastien Jouve of France, who won the race in one minute, 40.299 seconds. The Burloak Canoe Club member finished in 1:40.963 to take the silver. In Sunday's 1,000m race, Matt Hoff of Germany won by almost two full seconds over Sweden's Anders Gustavsson. Van Koeverden was third in 3:32.514. Van Koeverden also finished sixth in the K-1 5,000m, an event that will be added to the world championship roster next year. Burloak Canoe Club member Mark Oldershaw won a gold medal in the C-1 (canoe singles) 5,000m and a silver in the 1,000m. The C-4 crew of Andrew Russell of Dartmouth, N.S. and Burloak's Oldershaw, Jamie Andison and Mark Klevinas finished eighth. SPORTSBRIEFS the country's top junior league handed out its year-end awards at the Memorial Cup on the weekend. NHL Central Scouting ranks Tavares as the top North American skater for next month's entry draft, though his main rival to be the first pick is the top ranked European player, defenceman Victor Hedman. The New York Islanders hold the first pick in the draft. Tavares led the Ontario Hockey League with 58 goals in 56 games, along the way establishing a new league record for career goals with 215. A two-time world junior gold medalist, Tavares was traded from Oshawa to London in January and had 32 goals and 50 points in 24 games with the Knights. Drummondville defenceman Dmitry Kulikov and Vancouver forward Evander Kane were the other nominees. Since first awarded to Eric Lindros in 1991, the award has gone to the likes of Patrick Kane, Vincent Lecavalier, Joe Thornton, Jason Spezza, Jay Bouwmeester and Jordan Staal. HERSHEY SILVER: The Oakville Cyclones under-11 boys' rep team reached the finals in the Hershey League this past indoor season and played the undefeated Dixie Blue Demons tough in a 31 loss. Members of the team were Brandon Logan, Callum MacDonald, Josh Widman, Patrick LadlyFredeen, Scott Fishman, Daniel Liddell, Nathaniel Littlejohn, Christopher Schmidt, Joaquin Torres, Jordan Grist, Frank Bosco, Bryan Lourenco, Nicolas Popov, Benjamin Hamburg, Gabriel Noblecilla, Matthew Soutar, Thomas Wookey, Brian Veloso and Christopher Tremblay. Dagoberto Torres and Acacio Veloso coached the club. Beach volleyball camp next month Beach volleyball players will have an opportunity to work on their game next month at Arnolds Beach Academy. The Burlington Blaze Volleyball Club will run a beach volleyball camp July 6-10 for boys and girls ages 9-18. The Blaze will also run two other camps this summer. An indoor beginners camp for girls with limited or elementary-only volleyball experience will be held July 20-24, and an advanced camp for players with club or secondary school experience will take place Aug. 1014.
