At the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, following an admirable, determined battle against the consequences of a serious infection, Bruce W. Borgstrom tragically lost his valiant fight to live. Bruce was the middle son of renowned Swedish-born landscape architect, Carl A. Borgstrom. He was born and raised in Toronto. At the age of 2, his mother mysteriously disappeared. Sadly, no one ever learned what became of her. As a single father, Carl struggled raising Bruce and his two other children, Bele and Brunhilde, through the Great Depression. Carl eventually remarried. Bruce shared his father's love of botany, gardening, architecture, and landscaping. He also developed impressive drafting and visual art talents. Golfing soon became his favorite pastime. His career in real estate spanned more than 50 years, and amazingly, Bruce retired at the age of 90. Bruce was a gentleman who steadfastly upheld the values of honesty, integrity, and sincerity. To counteract the sources of anxiety and hardship in his life, Bruce found joyful healing being involved with gardening, golfing, taking drives in the country, listening to classical, tango and ragtime music, learning about new technologies and innovations, having a good laugh, as well as spending time with his youngest daughter, Raychyl, with whom he had formed a strong, special bond. During life's most challenging, upsetting times, Bruce tried to remain optimistic and humorous, even until the end. This is the time of year that Bruce loved best. How cruel that he was denied of enjoying one final summer with his family. Without Bruce, happiness will forever be unimaginable for those of us who loved him. He is predeceased by his cherished stepmother Mabel Tuckett and older brother Bele ("Bill") Borgstrom. Bruce is survived by his wife Lynne of 38 years, sister Brunhilde, sons Rick and Jon, daughters Lynda MacLachlan and Raychyl Whyte (formerly named Nicki), and six grandchildren. A gathering to honor Bruce's life will be held on Sunday June 7, at 2:00 PM, at 42 Florence Street in Hamilton (Please RSVP: 289-389-0512). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heritage Canada Foundation, the Ontario Heritage Trust, or the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (of which Bruce's father was a founding member), would be greatly appreciated.
