9 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 10, 2009 Working to survive and trusting God Continued from page 6 one was around. I thought I had cried most of my tears, but I was wrong. Guess what? Next day the sun shone, Ian still needed a shower and not much had changed...except for me. Good thing God's big -- I'm realizing I'm a pipsqueak -- which is good. It takes away a lot of the responsibility. Alaska was a last-minute decision. It was always on our bucket list and we made plans, including a passport for Ian (he had never had one as he noted don't need one to get into Algonquin). I fretted about everything and not one thing went wrong. Except that Dennis -- who turned down our bed, brought our linen, made little animals out of facecloths, hunted down tools, provided tips and funny stories, cleaned our bathroom and our balcony -- couldn't come home with us. We took videos every day, so we have our very own National Geographic special. It was a wonderful break. Princess took care of everything, even cutting Ian's meals when we were out to eat. Pristine, there's no other word. The glaciers have been flowing and retreating for thousands of years and will continue to do so. The entire experience put our circumstances in perspective. We are not in charge. Life is small here. Those who have physically been with us since the beginning of this, are still with us. You know who you are. Love and support comes in the form of visits, food, phone calls, e-mails. Some are close, some far away. For those living the ALS adventure through us, we think and talk of you often. For some who have come to visit who haven't seen Ian recently, it's tough -- we understand. Everyone has their way of dealing with this kind of thing. We are grateful for your prayers, positive thoughts and corny e-mail jokes. On July 4, Major League Baseball celebrates the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's farewell speech in Yankee Stadium. The Jays will be in New York, which is cool. Not much has changed since the Iron Horse died at age 37, but that doesn't mean we give up. We challenge you to make July 4 your ALS day -- with a donation to ALS Canada, a phone call to a friend, telling someone new about ALS and what you know about this sure killer. Pollyanna does not live here, nor does neither Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm nor any other fictitious do-gooder who can hope deliriously in the face of hopelessness or despair. We who live here are trusting God's order, loving one another and doing our best not to drive each other crazy; most days we succeed and some days are writeoffs, just like everybody else. Take good care of each other... Master plans are long-range plans that integrate infrastructure requirements for existing and future land uses with environmental assessment principles. While the Master Plan addresses need and justification at a broad level, more detailed studies related to some infrastructure components of the Master Plan are expected to be undertaken at a later date as part of Municipal Class EAs for other Town and Halton Region infrastructure projects. The study area for the Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) includes all of the Town of Oakville. The Master Plan is intended to guide the Town as it works with Halton Region and adjacent municipalities (Burlington, Milton and Mississauga), Ontario Parks, Ontario Ministry of Transportation, Halton Region Conservation Authority and other partners over the next 10+ years and beyond to implement a comprehensive pedestrian system and on and off-road town-wide cycling network while minimizing environmental impacts. The recommended Master Plan is based on the study findings and incorporates comments from the public, stakeholders, agencies and Town staff. The draft Active Transportation Master Plan was presented to Community Services Committee on May 26, 2009 and was approved in principle pending a 30 day public review period. The Draft Active Transportation Master Plan is available for review online at www.oakville.ca/activea2b.htm. Or at Town Hall, 1125 Trafalgar Road, in the Engineering and Construction Department. Please forward any comments to Mr. Chris Clapham at the Town of Oakville by July 10, 2009. Thereafter, the Master Plan will be reviewed and revised taking into consideration the comments which are received from the public. The recommended Final Active Transportation Master Plan will then be presented to Town Council for approval and formal adoption.
